Since 1 October 2008, LCL has used the Visa and Mastercard 3D Secure authentication service to protect online card payments.
The 3D Secure service helps secure card payments made on e-commerce websites.
Since July 2010, LCL has provided customers with a unique, single-use security code for each 3D Secure transaction. This code can only be used for the transaction concerned. When registering for the service, customers must also create a password, which may be requested in certain circumstances.
Since March 2012, whenever a transaction is made on a 3D Secure website, LCL displays the personal telephone number or numbers registered with the bank, whether mobile or landline. Customers can then select the number on which they wish to receive the security code by SMS or automated voice message.
Once the payment form on the merchant’s website has been completed, an LCL authentication window appears. After selecting a telephone number, the customer must enter the single-use code sent by SMS or voice message.
If an incorrect security code is entered, the payment cannot be processed on the 3D Secure merchant website.
